Archive of Turkish Oral Narrative

The Archive of Turkish Oral Narrative, ATON, has a constantly growing number of patrons. New statistics have been released emphasizing the continued success of the ATON website. Approximately 200,000 documents have been digitally delivered to half the countries in the world. The Epics (Dastan) which date back 2,200 years are the most popular of the collection. Patrons have used 10,000 internet service points to access the website. The site is organized in mutually supporting sections including music, historical documentation, explanations of the narratives, and anthropological and ethnographic materials. Of the three similar programs worldwide ATON is the only collection digitized and accessible on the web. There are currently around 200 links to the ATON website from various other sites around the world. Academic and professional organizations with a link include such prestigious institutions as The U.S. Library of Congress and the British Library.

The South Seas Project

The aim of the South Seas Project from the Australian National University, the National Library of Australia and other institutions, is to produce an on-line companion to James Cook's momentous first voyage of discovery. It will offer the complete text of the holograph manuscript of James Cook's Endeavour Journal, together with some other logs, maps and documents relating to that voyage.

Further this project is interesting also because of its progressive use of technology: "The Centre's Online Heritage Resource Manager (OHRM) and Web Academic Resource Publisher (WARP) will be adapted to provide historians with a cheap and relatively easy way of creating web-based editions of historical documents that conform to emerging international standards for XML text markup and content description. The ultimate goal of the project is to create a "distributed" version of the tools in open source programming that will help facilitate collaborative production of historical information resources by researchers regardless of their location."

Anthropology Review Database

The University of Buffalo maintains a Anthropology Review Database. You can search and also browse through all reviews. It doesn't seem to be a small amount: about two new reviews a week, so one should take a look here more often. Via Archaeology Weblog

Server for Electronic Publications

The Ludwig-Maximilians University (Munich) has just put online its Server for Electronic Publications. The server meets the requirements of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol (OAI), which means that the metadata of every publication is available. Furthermore a full-text search is possible. There isn't yet a single publication on the server, though. But hopefully there are things to come ... See our recent related story

Encyclopedia of North American Indians

I just found an Encyclopedia of North American Indians with approximately 400 entries, mainly tribes, but also single persons and keywords. The short entries are mostly written by scholars and include a short bibliography.

The publisher Houghton Mifflin hosts also "Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia", but this would be only of slight interest, maybe for people researching the american colonialization history.

Les Classiques des Sciences Sociales

The Université du Québec à Chicoutimi hosts a phantastic francophone collection of full-texts called Les classiques des sciences sociales. Among this collection there are real gems for the cultural anthropologist, for example the writings of Émile Durkheim (1858-1917) and the writings of Lucien Lévy-Bruhl (1857-1939). Among the latter the Carnets (1938-1939) are of special interest. They form the late work of Lévy-Bruhl in which he reconsiders and clarifies his thoughts and theories. Everything is downloadable as full-texts, either in .pdf- or .doc-format, or both. offline via K.B. (tnx a lot!)

Human Nature Review

"Human Nature Review is a significant source of analysis and commentary for readers at leading universities and research institutes in over one hundred and sixty countries and is one of the most popular sites on the whole world wide web. Our goal is to bring into communication the variety of approaches to the understanding of human nature which have a regrettable tendency to be less in touch with one another than they might. We make welcome writings and discussions on anthropology, archaeology, artificial intelligence, behaviour genetics, cognitive science, [...], sociobiology, and debates about them; history, philosophy and social studies in the human sciences; Darwinian scholarship; hermeneutics; verstehen; biography and autobiography; psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches and so on. This list of topics and disciplines is meant to be suggestive, not exhaustive. [...] We are particularly interested in receiving overviews of recent work in disciplines relevant to the understanding of human nature, e.g., particular human sciences, narrative psychology, including historical and philosophical approaches." The What's New section is a good starting point, providing you with up-to-date reviews and more ... for example the full text of William James' "The variety of religious experience". Try Human Nature's search field -- it does a full text search on the database and gives its findings in a very worthwhile format.

Anthro-L

Well, it already was way overdue, to tell you about this: "Anthro-L is a "list", an electronic bulletin board dedicated to friendly and scholarly discussion of anything pertaining to anthropology and its study. (Please note that the list's name ends in "L", not "one".) The list is run on Listserv software from the University at Buffalo, in Buffalo, New York, USA. Since its inception in 1985, Anthro-L has grown rapidly. Messages from the list currently reach several thousand subscribers of all ages and backgrounds and from over 46 countries. Subscription is open to all. While only subscribers may post, non-subscribers are encouraged to send relevant messages to the List Manager (see address at end of file). Anthro-L is a forum for the announcement and discussion of anthropological news, research, theories, publications, meetings, exhibits, and events, and for dialogue on matters relating to the discipline itself. We welcome contributions from anthropologists, professional or avocational, and from our colleagues in other fields. The day to day operations of the list are carried out by the List Manager. Matters of policy and conduct are overseen by a Board of Governors. The Board is composed of present/past managers and owners of the list." Please have a look at Danny Yee's Anthro-L Homepage (from which the above statement was taken), and the fully searchable Anthro-L archives. You'll find information on how-to-subscribe here and here.

1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica online

The complete edition from 1911 of the Encyclopaedia Britannica is online -- because of copyright-law it isn't anymore mentioned on the site, that it actually is the Britannica. The site-maintainers are allowed to put the contents online, but not to use the label "Encyclopaedia Britannica"! I guess the freedom of science allows me to put this information here. (?) Anyway: "The best encyclopedia ever written was published over 90 years ago! And now you can find right here on the web! This 1911 encyclopedia is filled with historical information that is still relevant today. It fills 29 volumes and contains over 44 million words. The articles are written by more than 1500 authors within their various fields of expertise. As a research tool, this 1911 encyclopedia edition is unparalleled -- even today." Read more about this edition at Wikipedia.

Search for Antiquarian Books

In Cultural Anthropology you sometimes have to look at the historic descriptions of a ethnic group. For this, searches for antiquarian books may be helpful (you can order the books still a your local library, if available). The german Zentrales Verzeichnis antiquarischer Bücher as well as the American Antiquarian Society have excellent online search forms. I just found a lot interesting book using "travel patagonia" as keyword.
