Professor Fei Xiaotong, who has died aged 94, was one of China's finest anthropologists. His book Peasant Life In China (1939) made him famous in the English-speaking world, but he will be remembered in China for his role in advising the economic reformers in the post-Mao era, when the policy of rural industrialisation, which he had advocated since the late 1930s, flourished.

Wer diesen Sommer mit Meiers Weltreisen nach La Réunion reisen will, den überrascht auf Seite 155 des aktuellen Kataloges die nebenstehende Beschreibung der dort ansässigen Lokalbevölkerung und ihrem guten Essen. Geschmacklos?

But now change became apparent! Sony Online Entertainment made up its mind and launched Station Exchange, the first platform for legal trade with Everquest game-items. By doing so SOE not only explores a very promising emerging market but also acknowledges the substantial value so called virtual items do have. Being excluded from legal protection and carrying powerful cultural and social relevance, virtual property does affect meatspace and abuse (like theft among players) lead to very real and concerning consequences. Das wahre Leben, meint Sherlock Holmes, schreibt spannendere Geschichten, als ein Schriftsteller ersinnen kann. Besonders prickelnd wird es dann, wenn die Geschichten in unbekannter Ferne spielen, weit weg von daheim. So ziehen Ethnologen in die Fremde, um wahre Geschichten vom Leben der Anderen nach Hause zu bringen. Doch manchmal verschmelzen Leben und Phantasie. Wahre Mythen entstehen. Der Publizist Léo Taxil, der Sinologe Sir Edmund Backhouse und der Ethnologe Carlos Castaneda haben mit großen Illusionen die ganze Welt hereingelegt. Dabei sind ihre eigenen Lebensgeschichten zu unentwirrbaren Gebilden aus Dichtung und Wahrheit, zu wirklichen Phantasmagorien geworden. Sie sind wie der Trickster, den die Ethnologen in den Geschichten der Anderen gefunden haben.

The Cairo Magazine provides an interesting article on the displacement of the traditional moulids held in egypt. These festivals constitute annual worshippings of the local saints. The article concerns with the role of the Egyptian State who suppresses the feast as an articulation of folk culture. The government justifies his acting with security reasons while the more likely cause for the ban may be found among the intellectuals in the mosques who regard moulids and parades as nonconformist to the "official" Islam.

Mohammad Al Mokhtar Al Mahdy, Al Azhar University professor of Islamic and Arab Studies states:

“Moulids use up energy in a way that neither serves people in this life nor the next,” Al Mahdy worries. “Islam does not encourage holding such events except by reform propagandists,” he adds. “If moulids were cleansed of their spiritually polluting elements, they could be used to raise Muslims’ awareness of religious matters.” Link to the article.
