Tenth planet (?) named after Inuit Goddess

NASA-funded researchers have discovered the most distant object orbiting Earth's sun and named it after Sedna, Inuit Goddess of the Ocean. The object is a mysterious planet-like body three times farther from Earth than Pluto, reports Nasa. In fact, its really cold there (-240 Celsius). If its really a planet, what is already discussed, then it is a fair move from the scientists to use a god name from outside european mythology. In german, read also Spiegel. Via ITW

The name isn't official yet.

The official names of astronomical bodies (within this solar system) have to be approved by a committee of the International Astronomical Union. They have to power to reject names proposed by discoverers.

If "Sedna" is declared a major planet (extremely unlikely), the issue goes to the Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature. Otherwise, the Committee on Small Body Nomenclature gets the final say. More info at:

If Indeed Sedna Is a Planet Wouldn't It Be The Eleventh?

The resent article on the "tenth planet" called Sedna left me a little baffled. On the 8th of October 2002, in a British newspaper, a similar article was written about a planet called Quaoar, which was claimed to be the "tenth planet added to the solar system". Being a keen astronomer I noticed that practically a year later the New Scientist included Quaoar in the map of the galaxy. When I saw this I presumed that Quaoar had not been dismissed as debris as some scientist had thought. This was confirmed in The New Scientist magazine dated 20th March, which referred to both Quaoar and Sedna. You could probably imagine my surprise when I read that Sedna is being called the tenth plant. If indeed Sedna is a planet wouldn't it been the eleventh planet in the solar system?
