800 Dissertations from Hamburg University Online The University of Hamburg has a exemplary online database of meanwhile 800 dissertations online (most of them in german). You can browse them by department or search for keywords. And yes, you can read them completely online. I just stumbled over a thesis about the universality of the human rights, but there are also works about for example african families in exile or tourism and socio-cultural change in Madagaskar. Sadly, there are not many doctoral theses from anthropology. ... Link (0 comments) ... Comment Dept. of tools, zephyrin, April 6, 2003 at 10:50:04 PM CEST African Studies Abstracts Online African Studies Abstracts Online is the new electronic journal of the African Studies Centre in Leiden. Like its printed predecessor (African Studies Abstracts), African Studies Abstracts Online provides an overview of articles from periodicals and edited works on Africa in the field of the social sciences and the humanities available in the library of the African Studies Centre in Leiden. Each issue contains up to 450 titles with abstracts of collective volumes, journal articles and chapters from edited works, arranged geographically. Each issue also contains a geographical index, a subject index, an author index, and a list of journals and edited works abstracted in that issue. Almost 240 journals are scanned on a regular and systematic basis. This includes all the leading journals in the field of African studies, as well as a number of journals dealing with third world countries and development studies in general. Just under the half are published in Africa. A selection of edited works is also accessed and abstracted on a chapter-by-chapter basis. All publications covered are available at the African Studies Centre library in Leiden. ... Link (0 comments) ... Comment Dept. of tools, kerleone, April 2, 2003 at 9:43:12 AM CEST Search for Similar Books At the library of congress, the largest library in the world I discovered a interesting feature (which a lot may already know): If you search for a book using the "basic search feature, you can click on the "call number" of the book ("Signatur" in german). Now you can browse up and down through the books with a call number near the searched book and you will find mostly books with a very similar topic (but not always). A great help, even if you have to order the books at your local library afterwards. The call numbers are sorted by an hierachical classifacation system, which is best explained at this external site. Also you may want to read more about the composition of a call number. ... Link (0 comments) ...
