A student asked me yesterday how to cite internet sources like websites in scientific publications. Considered as common style is the Columbia Guide to Online Style, also known as MLA-Style. A detailed article about this problem is also available in german from Thomas Christoph Marx: Zur Problematik des Zitierens aus dem Internet.. I have to add two important ideas to that topic. First of all: internet pages are fluctuant. Pages may not only vary in time, but also according to your browser or even your IP-Adress. So it makes no sense to add too much of information to your quotation, because the content may be different even from IP to IP. Even if you name your IP in the quotation, other people may not be able to get the same content at the same time. Thats sad but true. [Show more information about that.] Last year I wrote a german article about this fact, which was strongly discussed by my readers, and I posted also a english overview about the topic and the comments from my readers. And secondly, I strongly recommend to use a date format like "10 Feb 2004", because by using only numbers ("10.2.2004") the reader will not know which is month and which is day, as the positions vary from country to country.

I can't remember if posted yet, but I found a sensational archive of historic maps. You can find and download the maps drawn between app. 1830 and 1850. The Americas, Australia, Asia, Europe, Africa, various detailed regions and states of throughout the world - if someone shouldn't be satisfied by just having them virtually on the computer you can also buy them printed on linen. The Bayrische Staatsbibliothek in Munich recently opened the so called "Quartkatalog", containing all books and their call numbers from 1841 to 1952, for access via internet. The time before books between this range were only researchable by library staff.

If you're doing online research, it is in some cases essential to download whole websites to store them on the harddisk - for archiving them or only to work with them. One free and useful tool for this task is the Webdownloader, which not only modifies the pages so that you can use the links (the URLs pointing now to the pages on your harddisk), but also keeps the original, unmodified versions of the pages. Remember: The free program is called "Webdownloader". Don't mix it up with the "Offline Browser", a more complex successor which is also offered on that page for money. If you know a more sophisticated program for this task, recommendations or short reviews are welcome.

Students all over the world: Did you ever have a hard time with MS-Word and its sometimes strange behaviour? Or even sleepless nights, plagued by paranoia 'cause the copy of MS-Office you use is ... well ... not quite "bought"? This era of uneasiness is over now. Now you can use OpenOffice, a free open-source office suite which features everything the MS-suite does. And it has several advantages apart from being free: For example you can export your documents as .pdf files, and OpenOffice saves everything in XML format, which means that the documents thoretically can be converted into any format, e.g. into publishable .html. You can read the book OpenOffice.org XML Essentials on this topic by J. David Eisenberg online. The second thing is that Sun Microsystems maintains an own improved version of OpenOffice, called StarOffice. StarOffice has very good dictionaries implemented for example. I recently published a short article about how to publish footnotes in online publications more convenient. I came up with a solution, which shows the additional text in the same line, if the footnote is clicked. This is far more convenient for the programmer and for the reader, as I think. The article is german, but html-experienced will still understand by looking at the code and the given examples in the grey boxes.

The Humboldt-University, Berlin, Germany has launched an online-project called Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Ethnologie. The site features certificated online-resources, a metaserach, and access to Berlin's special book collection -- everything in respect to social/cultural anthropology. Furthermore there's a downloadable paper (.pdf) on recherche-strategies, which is quite helpful for students.
