The Origin of Football

Did anyone here know, that the munich ethnological museum has a Chinese text from approximately 50 B.C. that mentions games very similar to soccer that were played between teams from China and Japan? No? This american page mentions that in a short history of football. Via Monolog

Roots of African Pop in Munich

Urban African Sounds presents Samuel Kwabena Nyama & Band on Saturday the 14th of December 2002 at the "Museum für Völkerkunde" in Munich, Germany. 20:00h: meet & greet mit den Musikern; 21:00h: Concert. 78 year old Samuel Kwabena Nyama (<-You can download .mpegs of his music at this website) is one of the last so called "palm wine musicians". He started to play the guitar in the 1940s and currently lives near Kumase in Ghana. "In my songs I am teaching moral and they are so touching, that if somebody has a knife in his hand and is about to kill somebody, he will put down his knife." Admission: 10 Eur, students: 7 Eur.

Bavaria and the Moor

The Süddeutsche Zeitung reports about a exhibition in the museum of the diocese Freising. As you can read there, the exhibition is not only about how the moor came into the emblem of freising, it's also generally about the sometimes shaming concept the europeans had from the africans.

Art Exhibition by Brazilian Artists in Munich

From 16th to 20th december 2002 in Munich will take place an Exhibition of paintings by Brazilian artists.

Location: Flat of Mrs. Milka and Mr. Reinhard Tisma Oettingenstrasse 10 80538 Munich (U4 or U5 to Lehel Station)

The artists are living in the favelas of Salvador da Bahia in Brazil. In adition you will find some pictures by the joung artist Iêda Oliveira. Iêda Oliveira has been awarded in her land Brazil with different art pizes.

Forgive me! :: A filmmaker's pact with the devil

Munich: The studentic 'workgroup film' of Munich's "Institut für Ethnologie und Afrikanistik" shows the film "Vergeef me – Forgive me" by filmmaker Cyrus Frisch from the Netherlands. Mr Frisch's film deals with the topic of 'watching people suffering in the media'. To make the audience aware of the acceptance of mediated cruelty, Frisch goes beyond the accepted means of filmmaking. He visits those who live at the fringe of society, looks upon them in empty factory-buildings or drags them on stage. The result is a disturbing hybrid consisting of documentary and reality-soap elements. In the end he tries to answer the questions concerning the ethics of his film, of making documentaries, and of the media in general. "Forgive Me" already was shown at numerous high-class filmfestivals and now can be seen at our institute (Room Nr. 1.05) on Tuesday the 19. November 2002 at 19:45h. Admission is free. The workgroup has contacted Mr Frisch and still hopes that it will be possible for him to be present!

SIDA :: Affaire de tous

Munich: Tonight the "Workgroup ethnological film" -- a workgroup powered by students of our institute -- shows two movies on the topic "Aids". Both films were made on location in Mauretania by Stephanie Benyr, who collaborated with mauretanian youths to get the movies done. Miss Benyr will be present tonight, give an intro speech on her films and translate, as the films are in the languages Pular and Hassanyia. The films are shown at our institute in room Nr. 1.05 and start at 19.45h.
