Madunia, an NGO to support African musicians

Madunia is a Dutch NGO, initiating many projects dealing with African music. Madunia is having tow different web sites on different music genres in Africa. There are different projects such as making videos with artists, inviting them for concerts in Netherlands, producing their music (e.g. for Tanzanian rapper Mr. II in Amsterdam). There also is a documentary movie about East African HipHoppers, the movie is called Hali Halisi (a Swahili expression meaning "the real situation"). One of the web sites is about African HipHop, the other one is about past and future music including descriptions of musicians like Tondo who plays acoustic versions of classic and less well known rumba music from East Africa's 70's and 80's; like Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe and his Nigerian Sound Makers International from Nigeria; or like Mr. II from Dar Es Salaam (see him on the photo). People from Madunia also are responsible for some articles about African music styles.

Hip-Hop in Africa

This famous web site (www.africanhiphop.com) contents many informations about Hip-Hop music in whole Africa. Its content manager is coming from Netherlands, and this site is one of the best existing sites about African Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop is an important tool for many young people in West and East Africa to describe how they see their world. And it's a very interesting anthropological topic. In Bayreuth where Africanists from e.g. Germany, Tanzania and Netherlands met last week-end, one of the topics, they talked about, was the role of Hip-Hop in East Africa.

AK Feldforschung - Fieldwork’s in the air!

In order to tackle some of the practical aspects of fieldwork and anthropological research, students at the Institut für Ethnologie und Afrikanistik (Munich) have come up with the Working Group on Fieldwork (ArbeitsKreis Feldforschung). Since its creation in October 2002, the AKFeldforschung holds regular sessions dealing with fieldwork techniques, planning, analysis, introspection, etc.. For those participating it leaves plenty room for debating and discussing ‘field issues’ – with students having gained none or first fieldwork experiences. As well, doctoral candidates and some of the Institute’s staff members regularly attend the AK meetings and contribute to it as ‘fieldwork experts’.

Look up this semester’s appealing Programme (application/msword, 28 KB) and join!

The AKFeldforschung usually meets at the Institute on Thursdays at 15 o’clock. Contact us at AKFeldforschung@web.de

Legong -- dance of the virgins

On Friday, April the 16. the movie "Legong -- dance of the virgins" from 1935 is shown at the film-museum in Munich. The film (2-colour technicolor), directed by Henri de la Falaise, is about a beautiful but quite jealous balinese temple-dancer who falls in love with a gamelan-musician. But alas, the musician is in love with her sister ... Along with Vicki Baum's 1937 novel "Tale of Bali", "Legong" is another gem of an early artistic/ethnographic view on Balinese society. In contrast to Baum's novel, the film is hardly known and seldomly seen. The film-museum shows it during a Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-retrospective. During the retrospective other early films of the south-seas will be shown, too: "Bali -- Insel der Dämonen" (1931/33, directed by Murnau, ethnological adviser: Viktor von Plessen and the painter Walter Spies of balinese fame); "Tabu" (1929/31, directed by Murnau). You can download the program-table and the retrospective-leaflet as .pdf-files. "Legong" starts at 21:00h, admission is free.

Visit this page under ethnolog.de

This is great relief for the scientific community: As all of us just have their brains overloaded with the most important things of the world, like the exact measurements of all the arrows used in a small village in the brazilian rain forest around 1956, you have now the great chance of sorting out something. Forget about our URL "sonner.antville.org"! From now on you can easily use "ethnolog.de". Got it?

New adress of Ethno::log: ethnolog.de.

Of course you can still visit us under sonner.antville.org". This could also be more useful, as you will always see the correct URL of a story in your browser. If you visit the page via "ethnolog.de", the adresses line in your browser is always overwritten with "ethnolog.de".
