51th International Congress of Americanists

The 51th International Congress of Americanists will take place in Santiago, Chile on July 14-18, 2003. Its motto is "Rethinking the Americas at the threshold of the 21st century". Highlights from the Aztec Exhibition

The Guardian shows some of the nicest pieces in the new opened aztec exhibition in London. And there's some article describing the exhibition. "Grotesque gods, demonic animals, human sacrifice ... the art of the Aztecs is the stuff of nightmares", says the author. Of course he says not what the nightmare of the aztecs was ... probably the thought, all their religious goods and skulptures could fall in the hands of the enemys far away from home, where nobody understands them ;-)

Starting in two days in Bayreuth: A conference about the Audience of Images - Visual Publics in Africa and Beyond: "While the recent increase of studies in the realm of visual culture has led to new and exiting insights in the role of images as active agents in the political economy of desire and the shaping of social movements in colonial and postcolonial Africa, the issue of the audience of these images remains a vexing question. All too often respective statements with regard to the actual effect of images on a given public are based more on assumptions than on empirically grounded arguments." Negotiating Power :: Workshop on Muslim Societies

From 12. to 15. December 2002 there will be a workshop called "Negotiating Power, Contesting Violence, and Assessing Perspectives for Transcultural Approaches: Gender and Nation State in Muslim Societies" at the Carl-von-Ossietzky-University in Oldenburg, Germany. "This workshop aims to examine gendered power relations in contemporary postcolonial nation states and national movements within Muslim societies. Fused with power, force, and violence on theoretical, structural, and institutional levels, the nation state also constitutes notions of masculinity and femininity. Thus, analyses of gender and the nation state must encompass processes of construction and maintenance as well as strategies of subversion, violation, and mediation. [...] This workshop will bring together researchers from the Mashreq, the Maghreb, South Asia, Europe, and North America with the overall aim to assess perspectives for transcultural approaches, discourses, and networks." The following panels will take place: "Frameworks: Gender (In-)Equality and Trajectories of Nation States", "Strategies against Violence: Acting within National Legal Systems", "Masculinity and the Nation State in the Middle East", and "In the Name of the Nation: Between Sacrifice and Agency". Registrations should be in by November the 15. 2002.

Ethnography of work[shop]

On the 14. and 15. February 2003 there will be a workshop entitled "Ethnography of work -- Work of ethnography" at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. Topics will be "Organization research", "Ethnography and discourse analysis", "Chances of participating ethnography", "Ethnographic Interviews", "Ethnography and information systems", a case study amongst DJs, and many more.
