Research for Khoe and San Development

The cultures, lifestyles and general quality of life of the Indigenous peoples across the world have attracted the attention of researchers, development practitioners, government officials and non-governmental organizations all over the world. However, limited opportunities exists for interested parties to meet and exchange information on a variety of development issues the directly or indirectly affects the Khoe and San. Questions are increasingly being raised on the extent to which the Khoe and San are included in their own development and thus able to shape their destiny. We are pleased to announce plans for an international Khoe and San conference to be held in Botswana (University of Botswana) on the 10-12 September 2003. The conference entitled: Research for Khoe and San Development will provide a unique environment for academics, government officials, development practitioners and the Khoe and San to dialogue on pertinent issues of mutual concern. The timing of this conference is opportune, given the recent international negative publicity about the treatment of the San in Botswana. It will raise the profile of the problem and provide essential information for future development in the area of research, policy making and programme implementation. Additionally, it will provide and an important platform for the Khoesan representatives to express their understandings and desires for more appropriate development policies and programmes. BRISMES Annual Conference: ”Education as a Force for Change?”

Exeter, 12-15 July 2003. The theme of this conference interprets 'education' in a broad sense, encompassing the humanities and social/political science. 'Education' as a means to pro-mote understanding in 'the west' will also be considered, in addition to its role in the management of conflict and conflict resolution.

We are calling for papers that represent education in its many forms from the medieval period up to the present. It is envisaged that the following themes will form the core of the conference, but papers on other topics, which may not necessarily be covered by the themes, are encouraged and will also be considered: Literature Conflict Resolution Politics History Economy Educational Reform and Reformers Systems/Institutions Culture Society International Relations Middle East / West Gender Islam perceptions Ethnic & religious diversity Language Current educational trends Transmission of knowledge Religious education

Names of possible panel organizers and further sug-gestions for panels are invited. Student panels are also welcome. Those intending to present papers or pro-pose panels should submit proposals and abstracts no later than 15 January 2003. The conference theme will be addressed through a range of plenary debates which seek to highlight the role education has played and may perform in the future. Additional events include a book exhibition, conference dinner and the BRISMES Annual General Meeting.

Summit of the Indigenous Woman of the Americas

It's the first summit of this kind and it's held these days in Oaxaca, Mexiko. The topics are:

  • Human Rights an Indigenous Rights
  • Indigenous Development and Globalization
  • Empowerment and Indigenous Participation
  • Spirituality, Education an Culture
  • Gender From The Indigenous Women?s Perspective Nobel Peace Prize winner and Guatemalan activist Rigoberta Menchú Tum is participating, bringing a level of notoriety to a population often characterized more by its invisibility than its presence. The San Antonio News are reporting. I have trouble judging the importance of the summit and the organizations behind it. There are'nt reports from serious media. Maybe someone knowing more can take a look at the organizations behind it and judge the event? Informations (german) about Menchú Tum.
