Tinariwen im Ampere-Club

Am Donnerstag, den 28. April, startet die neue Konzertreihe "club mundial" der Bayern-2-Radiosendung "Weltempfänger" im Ampere, dem neuen Club im Muffatwerk (Zellstr. 4). Zur Premiere spielt die Band Tinariwen aus Mali. Beginn um ca. 20:45 Uhr. Wer auf Ali Farka Toure, Boubacar Traore, Mariem Hassan etc steht: hingehen. Vorher und nachher ist Party mit Musike aus u.a. westafrikanischen Landen.

Madagaskartage in München

Am 22. und 23. April gibts wieder die Madagaskartage in München. Am Freitag bekommt man im Bayerischen Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Verkehr und Technologie Anregungen, wie es sich am besten in Madagaskar investieren ließe, und am Samstag findet ein kulturelles Programm im Goetheforum statt. Congo Exhibition 2005

In todays "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" there's an interesting article on p.6 regarding a new exhibition, Congo 2005, in Tervure/Brussels which critical reflects the colonial era of the small country in congo. The older exhibition, which was left unchanged since decades, containing mostly "animals, skins, drums and masks", as the NZZ remarks, has been changed to a critical reflection on the relationship of belgium and congo in past times. This reflection is still new to many belgians, says the author of the NZZ article and mentions examples from critical movie and theater performances which led to rages and protests, initiated by former belgian colonists and monarchy followers.

call for papers—cyberanthropology

Die neue website der DGV-Tagung 2005 ist online, und das deutsche abstract meines workshops 'cyberanthropology' kann dort eingesehen werden. Das deutsche und das englische abstract sind als call for papers zu verstehen. Vorschläge dürfen einen Umfang von 1500 Anschlägen nicht überschreiten und müssen vor dem 15. Juni 2005 via e-mail: Alexander.Knorr [at] vka.fak12.uni-muenchen.de an mich gesandt werden. Die Vorschläge können auf Deutsch oder Englisch verfasst sein—die Vorträge im Rahmen des workshops können ebenfalls Deutsch oder Englisch sein, dürfen aber nicht länger als 20 Minuten dauern. Der workshop ist vorläufig anberaumt auf Donnerstag, den 06 Oktober 2005, 13.45-15.45 und 16.00-18.00.

Call: Videoüberwachung, biometrische Merkmale in Reisepässen, digitale Vernetzung von Datenbanken, Rasterfahndung, Terrorbekämpfung, innere Sicherheit und Katastrophenszenarien: Wir sind gerüstet für alle Eventualitäten und Unsicherheiten - sind wir? [read all]Können wir uns also sicher fühlen? Und warum sollten wir uns in Sicherheit wiegen, wenn diese doch immer stärker von technischen Verfahren im Zusammenspiel mit menschlichem Verhalten abhängen? Bedrohen die Technologien und politischen Strategien unsere persönliche Freiheit oder erleichtern sie unser Leben und machen es letztendlich doch sicherer? Welche gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen stehen hinter den Technologien und den Diskursen, die sie annehmbar und vertrauensvoll erscheinen lassen?

Die Tagung lädt ein, diese und andere Fragen der Überwachung zu diskutieren und anhand aktueller Forschungen und politischer Entwicklungen, die möglichen Konsequenzen neuer Formen der Überwachung zu erörtern. Call for Papers::Bilder im Konflikt

Tagung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde vom 4. bis 7. Oktober 2005

Mit dem Thema "Konflikte - Menschenrechte - Interventionen" wird auf ein Problemfeld verwiesen, mit dem sich auch die visuelle Anthropologie befasst. Dort, wo unterschiedliche Positionen, divergierende Anschauungen und interessengeleitete Praktiken aufeinander stoßen, werden auch Bilder produziert und verhandelt. Visuelle Medien werden sowohl als Mittel der Konfliktaustragung als auch zur Dokumentation und Vermittlung eingesetzt. Sie provozieren, manipulieren und faszinieren. Sie ebnen Unterschiede ein und heben Trennendes hervor. Sie eignen sich zum Widerspruch und zur Verständigung. Mit Blick auf dieses weite und immer aktuelle Themenfeld plant die AG ein Schwerpunktprogramm zu "Bildern im Konflikt".

Die Sektionssitzung spricht explizit auch KollegInnen an, die sich (bislang) nicht als visuelle Anthropologen verstehen, sich jedoch ? sei es auf methodischer oder inhaltlicher Ebene ? mit der 'Kultur der Bilder' auseinandersetzen.

Hexenforschung ethnologisch

Wie anders sind die Hexen der anderen?
Hiermit laden wir zum nächsten Treffen des Arbeitskreises Interdisziplinäre Hexenforschung (AKIH) ein -- in erster Linie die Mitglieder des Arbeitskreises, darüber hinaus aber alle in diesem Forschungsfeld Arbeitende. Das Thema ist oben ausgewiesen; daneben treten noch -- wie immer -- einige Beiträge "aus der Forschung".

Tagungsprogramm

Zum Schwerpunkt: Ethnologie und Geschichtswissenschaft korrespondieren im Bereich der Hexenforschung seit geraumer Zeit. Intensiv wurde bereits die gegenseitige Beeinflussung diskutiert, u.a. auch bei Tagungen des AKIH. Geringer scheint der Konsens bisher jedoch in der Frage, wie fremd die "fremden Hexen" eigentlich sind, oder anders ausgedrückt: ob man diese zu einem Vergleich mit den in der Geschichtswissenschaft untersuchten Problemen heranziehen kann oder ob das auf Grund der kulturellen Unterschiede gänzlich unmöglich ist. Trotz einiger Differenzen zwischen dem ethnologischen und dem historischen Hexenbegriff lassen sich doch auch eine Reihe von Übereinstimmungen aufzeigen, speziell mit Blick auf Elemente der Volkskultur, die in die frühneuzeitliche Hexereivorstellung eingeflossen sind. Außerdem wird Hexerei in beiden Disziplinen als sozialer Prozess studiert und bei den untersuchten Gesellschaften handelt es sich im allgemeinen um kleinere, überschaubare Gruppen. Weitere Ähnlichkeiten zwischen ethnologischer und historischer Hexenforschung, aber auch die Unterschiede sind Thema der Tagung.

Die Fachtagung (wie überhaupt der AKIH mit seinen Aktivitäten) versteht sich als Forum für alle im Bereich der Hexenforschung tätigen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler. Zur gegenseitigen Information können neuere Publikationen, Werbematerial, Einladungen u.a.m. bei der Veranstaltung ausgelegt werden; daneben bleibt die Möglichkeit der mündlichen Vorstellung im Plenum. -- Nach Stuttgart-Hohenheim ins Tagungszentrum der Akademie laden wir herzlich ein.

Please email a 200-word abstract in English to the entire steering committee. Make sure to include the proposed paper's title, the author(s)'s name, institutional affiliation (both university and department), mailing address, email address, fax and phone number.

Decisions about whether the abstract has been accepted will be communicated no later than 31 March 2005.

PLEASE NOTE that according to the ESA guidelines for this conference, abstracts should not exceed 200 words and individuals should not deliver more than one paper at the ESA conference. Moreover, abstracts should only be sent to the below addresses and not to the Local Organization Committee in Torun.

Summer School: New trends on the anthropology of Southern Europe,Lecce Italy

The University of Lecce is pleased to announce the first International Summer School in anthropology to be held in Apulia (Puglia), southern Italy.

In the current era when a thorough understanding of cultural and local differences is the only means to avoid dangerous generalizations, clichés and intolerance, we feel the need to offer an opportunity to experience “learning in the field”. It is our belief that southern Italy constitutes an appropriate venue for discussing in loco issues relating to various fields of contemporary anthropology, such as the changing moral and social role of Christianity, the impact of globalization and mass tourism on religious rituals and festivals, material culture and the revival of a “southern identity”.

Participants will be able to test the applicability of theoretical methods in the field and discuss them with scholars who live and work in everyday contact with these phenomena. This approach will offer up a lively perspective on anthropology, with a strong emphasis on communication and interaction between students and lecturers as well as students and locals.

Instructors at the Summer School will mostly (and not only) include teachers of anthropology in southern Italian academic institutions and local researchers. This is intended to provide a real "emic" perspective to the school activities.

The language of the Summer School will be English. Applications are welcome from students and scholars working on anthropology, Mediterranean studies, religion and other themes in the social and cultural anthropology of Europe. Applicants should be interested in theoretical and methodological issues and in comparative approaches.

The course will last 10 days. The seminars will cover several topics in the field of the anthropology of Southern Europe and especially the specific ethnographic case of southern Italy.

The structure of the Summer School is based on two types of sessions: theory and practice. Theoretical sessions will usually take place in the morning, while the afternoons will be devoted to field trips, excursions and practical sessions. This approach is intended to enable participants to take an active part in the program and observe first-hand some of the problems and phenomena discussed in the course.

Material Culture is currently one of the most provocative interdisciplinary fields in the social sciences and humanities. Different disciplines are developing many ways of looking at human cultures and societies through objects and artefacts. This conference aims to promote cross-disciplinary material culture studies in Ireland by bringing together a number of invited international speakers from anthropology, archaeology and museum studies to talk about their current work.
