Death by Answering the Phone AllAfrica reports about a interesting case of syncretism of traditional (I guess) beliefs and western technology: In lagos, nigeria, there's some kind of panic under lots of people, as they believe that some mobile numbers will kill you immediately, if you answer a call from that numbers. ... Whaley from Dartmouth College give an interesting overview on the linguistic work of Charles W. Furlong who worked on the languages of Tierra del Fuego nearly 100 years ago in their article What Does Digital Technology Have to Do with Yaghan?. The article is also a postulation for the use of digital technology in linguistics. A highlight for everyone interested in indians of tierra del fuego is the sound recording (Quicktime) contained in the article with a prayer in yaghan, presumably spoken by the famous missionary Thomas Bridges. See also this older story on the vanishing languages of Tierra del Fuego. ... Link (0 comments) ... He's wearing a sarong-like garment, and he has unstoppable spiritual powers of asskickage, writes BoingBoing. Read more at the Gothamcomics Press Release. ... Link (1 comment) ... Comment Dept. of ethnologica, kerleone, June 14, 2004 at 10:29:38 AM CEST Pop. Anthropology: Shamanism Conference Der german newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung reports well balanced, sometimes serious, sometimes cynical, about a shamanism conference held in Mondsee, Austria: "Die Wundererwartung ist gewaltig auf Schloss Mondsee.
