Nobody's reign

BECK, ULRICH. 2002. Macht und Gegenmacht im globalen Zeitalter: Neue weltpolitische Ökonomie. Frankfurt am Main:Suhrkamp Verlag. [15,-- Euro] The renowned sociologer Ulrich Beck, teaching in Munich, Germany, has published a new book on globalization, which already is heavily discussed. Yesterday the Süddeutsche Zeitung dedicated half a page to the book. Some time before the german weblog Dienstraum and the Netzeitung already had reported :o)

Southeast Borneo, History

KnapenKNAPEN, HAN. 2001. Forests of Fortune? The environemental history of Southeast Borneo, 1600-1880. Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde 189. Leiden:KITLV Press. [ISBN 90 6718 158. 33,-- Euro]

"The book deals with the relationship between people and the natural environment in Southeast Borneo, based on many hitherto unused primary sources. It describes the ways in which people made a living within the wide range of environments found here, focusing on agriculture, hunting, fishing, animal husbandry, forest exploitation, and the collection of products for the market. It deals with the impact of these activities on the natural environment and attempts to explain why most areas were strikingly little affected until modern times, yet others showed clear signs of human occupation and exploitation from an early date."

In the next issue of TRIBUS (Linden-Museum, Stuttgart) you will find a book review by Martin Baier.

New Commented Collection of Explorer Journals

The Guardian Unlimited reviews a new anthology of world explorers called "The Faber Book of Exploration", by Benedict Allen. For the unlikely case that someone here have or would read it, I would be very interested in this one's opinion.

Virtual Worlds :: Real Violence

VirtuelleWeltenBookThere's a new (german) book from the publisher "Heise" (which is also well known for the most important IT-News-Service of Germany, Heise.de): "Virtuelle Welten -- reale Gewalt". Different authors are reflecting about the connection between violent computer games and real violence. The books stated goal is to show, that the effects of violent games are far more complex than the sketchy assumptions the mass media has done after amok runs like in Erfurt.

LIT-Verlag Offers Catalogue

The publisher "LIT-Verlag" offers a catalogue of new books in ethnology and anthropology (and also other sciences). Unfortunately it's not for download, but they will send it for free to you by snail mail. Update: Just forget it. This publisher seems to be to stupid to send it anyhow. After 4 weeks waiting I still haven't got a catalogue.
