Dept. of something different, zephyrin, October 4, 2004 at 6:59:37 PM CEST Any language! Since quite a time we (that is the two administrators) wonder about the reasons for the lack of communal effort to fill the Ethno::log with information. The question is: Why aren't more people posting into the Ethno::log? That's not easy to answer, for sure. One reason, at least for non-native English-speakers, may be the language-threshold. So we decided: From now on everybody is allowed and ENCOURAGED to write in her/his native-tongue here at the Ethno::log. (In German, too -- of course). ... Comment

... Link

I welcome this reform
I welcome this reform of ethnolog, since I sometimes really wanted to write but felt restricted to the language. But I am afraid that this great source of information will turn into a german forum and exclude the english speaking community. Any ideas how we can keep up the multilanguage reform but still tell everybody in a language that everybody is able to communicate ? ... Link

Honestly, I don't know. My idea of "free language" in the Ethno::log came about like this: As by merely meditating about the matter we won't find the solution; better may be to start experimenting. If it turns out that by opening up the language-thing, Ethno::log will become a german weblog, this is fine with me, as long as it really starts to function. Another thing: I guess that there still will be new stories written in English. And as the majority of our visitors come here via search-engines, they will find the content they can read. ... Link

Is it the language barrier?
I am not sure if its really the language barrier, which keeps the students absent from this media. To find a solution supply some statistics, zeph. - Do the students really ignore this media? I for my part rarely post here, but I visit it frequently. I consider me as a user of this log - anybody disagreeing? So how many local users at least visit the site regularly? Maybe - as its true for my case - the least students consider their stories worth to be posted here....or they don't stumble over contents at all...?! The guys posting here are mainly netaddicts and scientific workers who are used to scrutinize the web for there needs. If you are only a casual user of the internet you won't really find something special that belongs to this page. ... Link

Thougt about the whole thing again. As I see it the barrier for the students is not (mainly) the language. Their problem is to meet the claims of this page... to fit in the standards here. As I said, this page is something for specialists - not for beginners as our most students are... Compare it to our "ethnologik" - which seems to work quite well and whose content is on a proper level for the general academic crowd. So what can be done? Changing the contents? Instead of asking why the otto- normal- student doesnt look for his benefit here, the better question is perhaps: why do more advanced students dont acceppt it...the phds etc...?! Even they avoid this page - what is the reason here? ... Link

No, it has not to do with the content. The ethno::log has enough readers. We could easily go on from that viewpoint. The problem is, that I don't want to continue posting all thing of interest here for other people, while the other people don't post their things. It's rather boring reading a weblog, where you wrote 70% by yourself. A weblog is a alongside-written-media. It usually just features the topics, the writers are involved also at work or in spare time. Thus, it could be so easy: everyone here could just post the things he discovers during work. I have no clue, why this didn't work. Maybe it's the english, maybe the internet fear, maybe the lack of fun while writing. Anyway, my idea is to shift away from the weblog concept and do a regulary news page instead. This means, people interested in the ethno::log will get a clear directive about their topic and how to get news for that topic. If that works, the benefit for all will be the same: a lot more news about anthropology and whats going on. @Pachulke: Please join our meeting at Dienstag 15 Uhr in the Teeküche. We will discuss all the problems and possible solutions in a small group. With the start of the semester we should have a new concept. ... Link ... Comment |
