Tourism Project in Morocco is Awarded for Being 'Socially Acceptable'

The german magazine "Die Zeit" wites about a tourism project in Morocco. Aim of the project is to involve the tourists in the social live of the touareg, and to confront them without shelter to the same problems of the desert the touareg have to accomplish. But also to the nice sides. The project has been awared now with the To-Do-Award from the Studienkreis für Tourismus und Entwicklung e.V. The website of the project, called RENARD BLEU TOUAREG, is available in german and french.

Maybe someone from our workgroup tourism would like to comment on that project?

From the workgroup anthropology and tourism..

My first impression about this project is quite positive (though it is difficult to get an opinion from a small description like that - also when looking at its website). The aim of the project is to involve the touareg themselves in the tourism business, or better: to hand over the tourism business to the local people. For me this seems to be one of the most important aims of a social sustainable tourism project.
Also the Studienkreis für Tourismus und Entwicklung is a well-kown association and the To Do award can be taken as a good sign!!
Anyway, one of the dangers of every tourism project is that (if not the outsiders) the local elites try to capture the benefits. We should know more about the project to understand how the local involvement is being organised, and especially which parts of the tourag people are benefitting.
This semester the "work group anthropology and tourism" at the Instut für Ethnologie und Afrikanistik will discuss concrete tourism projects in various regions of the world. Wednesday, Mai 7th (0.41, 12-14) will be the intial meeting to organise the meetings of this semester, which will be hold during two weekends in June. Everybody is invited to join!!

tourism project in marocco

I am not quite sure if the project is really as "social sustainable" as it sounds. There are many different local groups in that region in question, a lot of them work in tourism. There must be a fierce competition concerning the tourism market ( http://www.biosahara.com/ for instance). As far as I can see, only one local group (touareg?) is mentioned - what about all the others? How can the project ensure local involvement if only a part of the locals can take advantage of tourism?
