Dept. of tools, zephyrin, April 29, 2003 at 1:24:02 PM CEST 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica online The complete edition from 1911 of the Encyclopaedia Britannica is online -- because of copyright-law it isn't anymore mentioned on the site, that it actually is the Britannica. The site-maintainers are allowed to put the contents online, but not to use the label "Encyclopaedia Britannica"! I guess the freedom of science allows me to put this information here. (?) Anyway: "The best encyclopedia ever written was published over 90 years ago! And now you can find right here on the web! This 1911 encyclopedia is filled with historical information that is still relevant today. It fills 29 volumes and contains over 44 million words. The articles are written by more than 1500 authors within their various fields of expertise. As a research tool, this 1911 encyclopedia edition is unparalleled -- even today." It's the Enzyclopedia Britannica, but they had to rename it for copyright reasons. It's not a official site, it's only because meanwhile there is no copyright any more. Sadly, there are a lot of scan errors and not images available. But for a free offer it's quite not bad. Read more about at Wikipedia. ... Link

textz, warez and copyright-lawz
Thanks, Kerleone, for pointing that out. Actually the link was sorted into my bookmarks (which I don't use any longer ;o) as "Britannica 1911". Then I was quite astounded that nowhere on the website I could read WHAT encyclopedia it was, they had put online. Meanwhile I've edited the story and am awaiting a call from some lawyers ... Btw, was your 'typo' "Enzyclopedia" by purpose or by accident? ... Link

of course, it was by accident. As you know, online communities tend to use a written colloquial language. Ah, you mean enzyclopaedia with "z"! Like Warez! Hehe. Now, lets take a look how many people in the next two years will be directed by google to this page searching for warez ;-) ... Link

Well, jim left "my cyberian tribe" and seemingly the internet at all. He's not dead, though. But he just couldn't stand the 'style' of communication which sometimes is applied via CMC in some communities any longer. ... Link ... Comment |
