Scientific Weblog on Online Games and Communication

Torill Mortensen is an assistant professor at Volda College. She is writing a weblog about Multiple User Dungeons (MUDs), media studies and reader-response theory, role-play games and online communication, called "thinking with my fingers". And she just submitted a Ph. D. thesis on Computer Games in the beginning of March 2003, to the Faculty of the Arts, University of Bergen. The title is Pleasures of the Player: Flow and Control in Online Games.

Phantastic! Tnx a lot -- I'll have a deep look later and will comment then.

Take a look especially at her published paper Blogging thoughts: personal publication as an online research tool:
"Torill deliberately used her weblog as an introduction to explain the research to players of games potential informants and let them follow the development of the thesis itself. This eliminated some of the mystery and tension related to research, and has on several occasions made it easier to co-
operate with online role-players: the weblog establishes an accepted online presence which proves that the researcher is real to the digital space and not just a visitor with no knowledge.

Consequences for me ...

*plonk* Well, now it's definitely clear that I've got to bring an own website/log online to 'show off' my evolving project -- Kerleone mentioned this several times to me, and now I'm convinced, that he always was right. I guess I've got to do a deep-dig into Selfhtml now ... Our member Chris Kelty already used a weblog during his fieldwork in Berlin and Bangalore to get response from the subjects while the fieldwork is still running. I'll have a look if he already has published more on it now, or will just plainly ask him.
