The Cultural Diffusion of Halloween

halloweenIn this german article the german newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung thinks about how the traditional american festival halloween made its way into the german culture within only five years. A nice example, that the inculturation of foreign traditions is not only a thing of vanishing cultures (or are we a vanishing culture?). And as always in such cases, the guardians of the traditional religion are not very happy with this trend. A theologian is cited, that the christian church is already fearing the loss of holidays like Sankt Martin and Sankt Nikolaus. Another article about this "new german holiday" can be found in Die Zeit. Via Netbib

Re: The Cultural Diffusion of Halloween

I was almost driving over a stop sign (literally!) this evening, when I saw a line of children in disguise, armed with waterpistols and candy-bags, moving through the streets of my little homevillage eastern of Munich for the very first time.

I don't know if this will have an effect on Sankt Martin 11/11 or Nikolaus 12/6, although people might still be too drunk from some halloween party on 11/1 for the 'graveyard rally' (aka Allerheiligen), but I think it's definite SCARY!

Try out my cocktail creation...

4cl vodka
4cl midori melon liqueur
2cl maple syrup
10cl orange juice

...and let the consumer protection people sip on their calculable sodas.

Re: Re: The Cultural Diffusion of Halloween

I don't know if it's scary. It's so hard to judge about this case, because Halloween is pushed forward _also_ by commerical interest. But a grassroot movement seems to be part of it also. With other words, the people seem to enjoy this new tradition.
