Imagining Common Ground.
Abstract: As health care in the U.S. increasingly involves providing care to diverse populations, the urban hospital has emerged as an important, highly fraud, border site. While a wealth of research documents the misunderstandings, dilemmas and 'Othering Practices' that abound in border activities, this paper looks at successful border crossings. Drawing upon a 9-year study of African American families who have children with chronic illnesses and disabilities, I examine how parents, clinicians and children indigenize children's popular culture to create fantasy landscapes they can mutually inhabit.
