PhD Scholarship in the Field of Anthropology (Aarhus, Denmark) 'Political Reenchantment in Asia'


The Faculty of Humanities, University of Aarhus invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in Anthropology starting on 1 October 2006 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD scholarship will be financed by the Danish Research Council under the Research network Political Re-Enchantment: Religious Dimensions of Democratization in Asia.

The research network is funded for three years to study the role and significance of religion in modern Asian politics. The purpose is to map the diverse ways in which politics is currently being ‘re-enchanted’ – re-shaped by religious ideas – in Central, South, Southeast and East Asia. The applicant should detail how the project intends to study the relationship between politics and religion/spirituality in a specified Asian country on the basis of intensive anthropological fieldwork. The PhD scholar will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Aarhus, with the aim of completing a PhD degree at the Institute of Anthropology, Archaeology and Linguistics, University of Aarhus. The PhD scholar will be affiliated with The Danish Research School in Anthropology.

The PhD scholar will be employed by the University of Aarhus. The terms of employment as a PhD scholar will be in accordance with the agreement of 11 January 2006 between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on PhD scholarships.

The PhD scholar may count on the place of work being the Institute of Anthropology, Archaeology and Linguistics/Department of Anthropology and Ethnography . In general, the student is expected to be present at the institute on an everyday basis.

Application: The application for a PhD scholarship and enrolment in the PhD study programme must be prepared in consultation with the proposed principal supervisor at the Faculty of Humanities/University of Aarhus.

The written assessment of the candidate’s Master’s degree thesis must be submitted by the application deadline, and the candidate must have completed a Master’s degree no later than 30 September 2006. Supplementary appendices may not be submitted after the application deadline. Please note that incomplete applications will not be processed.

The 8 (eight) copies of the application are to be sent in one envelope to the Faculty of Humanities, University of Aarhus, Nobel Park, building 1453, Jens Chr. Skous Vej 3, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark. Any scholarly publications should be sent in 1 copy to the same address.

Deadline for applications: 15 June 2006 at 12 noon. Please include the reference number 2006-218/1-26 on the application.
