From February 8 through February 11 an international student's conference on "Changing Strategies in Documentary Cinema" will take place at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. There's also a panel on ethnographic film.

Der Abschied von "Mama General"

Eine 30 Jahre währende Dokumentation und ihre Geschichte

Familie bedeutet Zusammenhalt, Familie ist Heimat: eine physisch fassbare Bande und zugleich ein psychisch abstrakter Ort, der für Geborgenheit und Fürsorge steht, und Refugium, Basis und Raststätte in einem sein kann. Das Porträt einer oberflächlich eher bescheiden wirkenden Dynastie, das die Autoren Sylvie Banuls und Peter Heller in der Dokumentation "Mutterjahre" zeichnen, ist ein einzigartiges Stück Fernsehen: 30 Jahre lang begleiteten sie Familie Bronnmann aus Köln und erzählen die einfache Geschichte vom Leben, Tod und Überleben, das Kameraobjektiv stets auf Augenhöhe mit ihren Protagonisten.

Hansi steht am Grab seiner geliebten Mutter Karla Bronnmann, er hat einen kleinen Strauß Blumen in der Hand. Der Mittdreißiger zündet sich eine Zigarette an. Das ist sein Ritual, seine Mutter war zu Lebzeiten selbst leidenschaftliche Raucherin. "Sind Andi und Rebecca noch nicht da?", fragt er in Gedanken versunken und antwortet sich selbst: "Die kommen bestimmt gleich." Der Wind bläst, der Himmel ist Wolken verhangen. Es ist ein tristes und zugleich warmherziges Bild, dessen Grundstimmung sich als Leitmotiv durch die 99-minütige Langzeit-Dokumentation zieht.

"Mutterjahre" handelt von einer Familie aus der Arbeiterschicht, eher am Rande als in der Mitte der Gesellschaft, von deren Kindern und den Alltagsproblemen, die sie zusammen in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten bewältigen mussten. Ein Stück Milieustudie, ein Stück Zeitgeschichte, das die Zeit außerhalb des Mikrokosmos Familie nur wenig mit einbezieht. Der Film beschränkt sich mit einigen Ausnahmen auf die vier Wände von Vater Hans Bronnmann, Mutter Karla und den zwei erwachsenen Söhnen Hansi und Andi sowie Tochter Rebecca, die noch bei ihren Eltern wohnen.

Die Dokumentation vermengt nostalgische und entlarvende Rückblicke aus der Zeit, in der Mutter Karla Bronnmann noch lebte, mit der gegenwärtigen Realität. Neun Kinder hat Karla großgezogen. Seit 1974 begleitete Peter Heller (seit 1995 in Zusammenarbeit mit Sylvie Banuls) die vom Krebs gezeichnete Frau, die 2003 starb, und ihre Hinterbliebenen. Bisher entstanden daraus drei beeindruckende Dokumentationen, eine mit dem Titel "Mama General" (1997), die mit dem "Prix Europa" ausgezeichnet wurde. Den Autoren sei es gelungen, "eine Geschichte über Armut in all ihren Facetten und mit einem großen Gespür für Humor" darzustellen, so die Jury damals.

"Mutterjahre" aus dem Jahre 2004, der nun alle drei Jahrzehnte und alle drei Generationen umfasst, geht noch einen Schritt weiter und dringt tief in die Intimsphäre eines Sozialgefüges vor: "Das Kraftzentrum der Familie, Mutter Bronnmann, war schon seit längerem krank. Wir fragten uns, wie diese Familie ohne sie überleben würde, den Zusammenhalt behält", so die Autoren. "Mutterjahre" zeigt in diesem Sinne Einblicke, die in ihrer Nähe einzigartig sind. "Es gab vor allem in den letzten Jahren Momente, da wir immer öfter ohne Kamera bei der Familie waren, weil es Karla immer schlechter ging und wir Skrupel und Schuldgefühle hatten, die Angehörigen mit der Präsenz des Teams zu belästigen", beschreiben die Autoren ihre Beziehung zu den Menschen, die sie porträtierten. "Mitte der 70er-Jahre hatte das Team noch die Küche der Familie mit Scheinwerfern in ein Lichtstudio verwandelt. In den letzten Jahren hat uns der technische Fortschritt eine derartige Belästigung der Menschen erspart."

Mit der Zeit wurde Koautorin Sylvie Banuls zu einer engen Vertrauten der Familie, telefonierte häufig mit Mutter Karla und Tochter Rebecca. "Es wurde ein Hin und Her zwischen dem Respekt und der Achtung vor Menschen, die man mag, und dem Auftrag der Fernsehanstalt, eine 'vertragliche Produktion' fertig zu stellen."

Der Spagat, objektiv und trotzdem einfühlsam vom Leben der Kölner Familie Bronnmann zu berichten, die den Aufstieg aus dem Obdachlosenheim geschafft hatte, ist nicht nur geglückt, sondern ein erfrischendes Gegenstück zum schnelllebigen Doku-Geschäft der heutigen Zeit: "Mutterjahre" kommt ohne Kommentare und Erklärungen, es wird auf rasante Schnitte und allzu kurze Szenen verzichtet. Die vierte Dokumentation soll den Abschluss der 30 Jahre währenden Langzeitbeobachtung darstellen.

Als Karla vor rund einem Jahr ihren Kampf gegen den Krebs verlor, stand in der Todesanzeige in großen Lettern zu lesen: "Mama General' - Karolina Bronnmann, 1934 bis 2003". Das Leben und der Alltag dieser Familie, stellvertretend für zahllose ähnlicher Schicksale in Deutschland, unabhängig von dem gesellschaftlichen Status, geht weiter, weil es muss. Es sind die kleinen Dinge, die diesen Film groß machen.

Am 26. Januar 2005, auf den Tag einen Monat nach der Tsunami-Katastrophe, hat Oberammergau folgenden Beschluss gefasst: Die Premiere von "König David - ein biblisches Schauspiel mit Musik" am 22. Juli 2005 im Passionstheater Oberammergau, inszeniert von Christian Stückl (Intendant des Münchner Volkstheaters), ist eine Benefizveranstaltung zugunsten des Prana-Hilfsprojekts. Von den verkauften Karten des gesamten Sommers 2005 geht je ein Euro ebenfalls an das Prana-Hilfsprojekt.

So wird für unmöglich Gehaltenes möglich! Das Vertrauen ist uns Verpflichtung!

Das Prana-Hilfsprojekt dankt Oberammergau auch im Namen der Fischer von Chinnamudaliyarchavadi in Südindien von ganzem Herzen.

Das Grenzgebiet in Südkärnten, Österreich. Neben der deutschsprachigen Mehrheit lebt hier eine slowenisch sprechende Minderheit. In dem kleinen Dorftheater Trotamora wird auf Slowenisch `Das brennende Dorf´ von Lope de Vega in einer Fassung von R.W.Fassbinder geprobt. Während der Theatermacher mit seiner slowenischsprachigen Laienschauspieltruppe auf der Bühne den Aufstand gegen die Unterdrücker probt, bereiten sich die deutschsprachigen Patrioten vom Kärntner Heimatdienst, vom Abwehrkämpferbund und vom Kameradschaftsbund auf den 10.Oktober vor, ihren nationalen Feiertag. Sie beschwören den Abwehrkampf gegen die Slowenen von 1920, hetzen gegen zweisprachige Schulen und Ortstafeln, sie verteidigen ihre Heimat mit „noch mehr Denkmälern, mit noch mehr Fahnen und Fackeln“ und sie begrüssen ihren Landeshauptmann, Jörg Haider. Dazwischen die katholische Kirche. Heimat beider Sprachen. Trotz der Proteste des Kärntner Heimatdienstes hält sie Gottesdienste, Begräbnisse und Festtage konsequent deutsch und slowenisch ab. Ein Film über den Konflikt um Heimat und Identität, Unterdrückung und Macht. Im Theater und in der Wirklichkeit.

Der Film wurde auch auf dem Dokumentarfilmfestival München 2004 gezeigt.

The University of Lecce is pleased to announce the first International Summer School in anthropology to be held in Apulia (Puglia), southern Italy.

In the current era when a thorough understanding of cultural and local differences is the only means to avoid dangerous generalizations, clichés and intolerance, we feel the need to offer an opportunity to experience “learning in the field”. It is our belief that southern Italy constitutes an appropriate venue for discussing in loco issues relating to various fields of contemporary anthropology, such as the changing moral and social role of Christianity, the impact of globalization and mass tourism on religious rituals and festivals, material culture and the revival of a “southern identity”.

Participants will be able to test the applicability of theoretical methods in the field and discuss them with scholars who live and work in everyday contact with these phenomena. This approach will offer up a lively perspective on anthropology, with a strong emphasis on communication and interaction between students and lecturers as well as students and locals.

Instructors at the Summer School will mostly (and not only) include teachers of anthropology in southern Italian academic institutions and local researchers. This is intended to provide a real "emic" perspective to the school activities.

The language of the Summer School will be English. Applications are welcome from students and scholars working on anthropology, Mediterranean studies, religion and other themes in the social and cultural anthropology of Europe. Applicants should be interested in theoretical and methodological issues and in comparative approaches.

The course will last 10 days. The seminars will cover several topics in the field of the anthropology of Southern Europe and especially the specific ethnographic case of southern Italy.

The structure of the Summer School is based on two types of sessions: theory and practice. Theoretical sessions will usually take place in the morning, while the afternoons will be devoted to field trips, excursions and practical sessions. This approach is intended to enable participants to take an active part in the program and observe first-hand some of the problems and phenomena discussed in the course.

Material Culture is currently one of the most provocative interdisciplinary fields in the social sciences and humanities. Different disciplines are developing many ways of looking at human cultures and societies through objects and artefacts. This conference aims to promote cross-disciplinary material culture studies in Ireland by bringing together a number of invited international speakers from anthropology, archaeology and museum studies to talk about their current work.
