LIT-Verlag Offers Catalogue

The publisher "LIT-Verlag" offers a catalogue of new books in ethnology and anthropology (and also other sciences). Unfortunately it's not for download, but they will send it for free to you by snail mail. Update: Just forget it. This publisher seems to be to stupid to send it anyhow. After 4 weeks waiting I still haven't got a catalogue.

A UNIX family tree :: Software's genealogy

I just got this link from a good friend of mine. It perfectly illustrates where todays unix-es come from, where it all started and where the connections are to each other. So there you can see a genealogical tree of unix and see if there is a link between a linux, a solaris and a freeBSD :)

Columbus came to an ill continent

"The health of indigenous people in the Western Hemisphere was on a downward trajectory long before Columbus set foot in the Americas, researchers say." There's also a more clearly written article in the New York Times. (If you don't have an account there, you may use this: User: "ethno", Password: "log123" :o) Via Anthropology News

Anthropology Index Online

A great tool for research in scientific articles is The Anthropological Index of the Royal Anthropological Institute. You can search the database by author, titel, region or subject area and get a result of a mostly long list of articles to find in all kinds of publications. Thanks for this input by mail to Jürgen Plieninger. We are waiting for more hints like this, a weblog is not only for news!

Linux gets in the clash 'China vs. Taiwan'

The old conflict between China and Taiwan about flag and name of both countries is coming to your computer desktop now - or should we better say it's coming not: As Salon reports, a distributor of the alternative Operating System Linux, Red Hat, did remove the flag of Taiwan from the country settings of all their distributions (screenshot). They even commented the removing in the system files:

Mon Aug 5 2002 Than Ngo than@redhat.com 3.0.2-7.2
- add patch file to fix kicker segfault (bug #69688)
- get rid of Taiwanese Flag in KDE (bug #70235)

Hehe. A "bug" was that. Interesting. But people using computers sometimes take it very serious with configuring desktop and settings, even if there is no impact for the working of the computer, so soon there was big protest.

Piercing, Tattooing and Painting

Examples of Body Modification can be found in the galleries of the University of Pennsylvania Museum, some of it dating as far back as the 9th century B.C. Not really much to see, but nice pictures with some information anyway. Via ethno.info/

The Cultural Diffusion of Halloween

halloweenIn this german article the german newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung thinks about how the traditional american festival halloween made its way into the german culture within only five years. A nice example, that the inculturation of foreign traditions is not only a thing of vanishing cultures (or are we a vanishing culture?). And as always in such cases, the guardians of the traditional religion are not very happy with this trend. A theologian is cited, that the christian church is already fearing the loss of holidays like Sankt Martin and Sankt Nikolaus. Another article about this "new german holiday" can be found in Die Zeit. Via Netbib
