Leading Anthropologists are trying to expand the conecpt of culture also to primates, like the orang utan apes. After a nature-article now some scientists showed again, that also in ape population some cultural traditions can be found. For example, orang utans at Borneo use leaves to amplify their oral noises, the ones from Sumatra only their hands. The article is published in Science. You can also read about in Telepolis (german) and BBC (english).

Der Anthropologe Hugh Gusterson erforscht die Lebensweise und die Rituale eines besonderen Völkchens – der Entwickler von Atomwaffen
As Die Zeit reports, Gusterson wrote the book Nuclear Rites: A Weapons Laboratory at the End of the Cold War. This book, published 1998, is about a the nuclear weapon laboratory in Livermore in an anthropological aproach. I have not read it myself, but it sounds interesting.

Comment Dept. of cyberethnologica, kerlone, December 29, 2002 at 1:37:10 AM CET Problems with Nigerian Frauds are getting bigger The german newspaper taz has some nice articles about the nigerian email frauds. It seems that the whole problem is bigger as it would appear. Seems also like parts of the government are involved in the whole machinery. Also deadly cases have been reported. And I read today in a non-public forum that there are also a lot credit card frauds via the internet coming from nigeria and indonesia: "I just got an order for 10 identical pairs of shoes from Lagos, Nigeria using a yahoo email account.
This is really a very interesting adoption of culture, isn't it? More on the nigerian frauds in this older article from Wired. See also our older story. ... Link (0 comments) ... Comment Dept. of cyberethnologica, kerlone, December 27, 2002 at 8:14:02 PM CET Internet-Kids in Peru
I found a interesting amateur film doku about two kids in peru, who earn their money at a central place in cusco by selling postcards to tourists and after that spend the money to internet cafes, writing e-mails and playing starcraft. The article (scroll down to the entry "Feeding the Wired") provides also some links to internet use in peru.

The transition from manuscript to print culture in the languages and countries of the Middle East was as significant and as far-reaching in its effects as the equivalent shift in early modern Europe. Our informants are usually Kurdish women who immigrated from Turkey to Germany. In a broad sense, we are interested in analyzing how Kurdish immigrant women's identity has changed over generations in Germany. We have two major requests. Can you recommend us
