Huge Database: "Growing Up Sexually"

Diederik F. Janssen from the University of Nijmegen kindfully provided me with a link to his recently online published database Growing Up Sexually (World Reference Atlas & The Scripting of Sexual Development). He writes: "It comprises of a two-volume, bimodal overview of cross-cultural material relevant for the study of preadult sexual behaviour curricula and trajectories. The first volume (Atlas) consists of an annotated bibliography using a rough geo-/ ethnographical organisation. The outcome is a heterogeneous collection of accounts of sexual behaviour trajectories that may be or have been typical for given communities within a given ethnohistorical space or time span. The second thematic volume tentatively elaborates on this collection, by (1) organising and challenging traditions, theoretical paradigms, and meta-scientific positionings pertaining to sexual development issues provided by anthropologists; which, together with (2) the influx of (non-) cross-culturalist sociological data and perspectives, is to accommodate (3) a cross-cultural presentation of Atlas data within a polythematic format."

Battle Over Fate of Iraqi Antiquities Begins

Scientists are fearing that in a post war iraq the cultural heritage may be posed to danger. A week ago more than 100 Scientistists published a declaration in the Science Magazine. The scholars from US and UK are not just worried about the impact of bombs and tanks, but the looting that could accompany any breakdown of law and order in the aftermath of the war, reports The Guardian.

Meanwhile, a pressure group from the United States (lawyers, antique and art dealers, scientists and curators) are already trying to open the trade with Iraqui Antiquities after the war, reports the german Süddeutsche Zeitung. You may also read about this in the Science Magazine, if you have a subscription.

Anthropological Literature online index

Anthropological Literature is a bibliographic index to articles in journals and edited works received by Tozzer Library with more than 600,000 entries from the 19th century to the present. More than thirteen hundred edited works have been indexed since 1984. The index is updated quarterly. Coverage is international in scope. Major topics include cultural/social anthropology, Old and New World archaeology, biological/physical anthropology, linguistics, history, sociology, folklore, human geography and geology.

Kerleone adds: But it seems that you have to pay for accessing the database in case you're not a lucky member of harvard university. But: Students from Munich University can access it via the e-Media Portal from Bayrische Staatsbibliothek. You only need to enter your library number and PIN.

Search for Similar Books

At the library of congress, the largest library in the world I discovered a interesting feature (which a lot may already know): If you search for a book using the "basic search feature, you can click on the "call number" of the book ("Signatur" in german). Now you can browse up and down through the books with a call number near the searched book and you will find mostly books with a very similar topic (but not always). A great help, even if you have to order the books at your local library afterwards.

The call numbers are sorted by an hierachical classifacation system, which is best explained at this external site. Also you may want to read more about the composition of a call number.

Electronic Journal on Virtual Culture

Don't be too delighted after reading the headline: The Electronic Journal on Virtual Culture is another scientific magazine with an interesting title, which was published only for a short period. From 1993 to 1996. But this is really early for this topic, so it could be quite interesting to browse the old issues.

Early Ethnological Online Magazine

I just stumbled about a early online magazine, made by the colleagues from the University of Münster, called Ethnologie Heute (Anthropology Today). Only three issues back in the end of the 90's have been published, then it sadly seems to have been discontinued (even if there's a button misleading to other beliefs, saying "Against War" - it's against the war in yugoslavia). You can still read the articels from the former issues. Well, I hope the Ethno::log won't be discontinued; but it looks good at the moment. Its surprising, that a lot of people not involved in anthropology and even from different continents are not only reading this site, but also posting news and thoughts here. I guess, the advantage of the Ethno::log is, that it's really easy to quickly post (in bad english) about a news or a website, you found in your daily work.
