I just found an Encyclopedia of North American Indians with approximately 400 entries, mainly tribes, but also single persons and keywords. The short entries are mostly written by scholars and include a short bibliography.

The publisher Houghton Mifflin hosts also "Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia", but this would be only of slight interest, maybe for people researching the american colonialization history.

"Cherchez le Chercheur" No. II Resuming the "Cherchez le Chercheur" series set off last week, this picture provides the researcher's view of the presented ceremonial scene. It is, of course, taken from a completely different angle and focuses solely on the protagonists' activities. Also, note that it carries features of an actual group portrait - however stemming from a different, yet intentional arrangement: the 'traditionalists' (priests, chiefs, palace functionaries) are not supposed to stand behind the person preparing the ritual but rather must back the one (in red cloth) who will pour libation on it afterwards. A 'natural' setting offering an opportune access for another protagonist - the photographer.

Look up next week's picture! The same 'traditionalists' - and with them the researcher - will pose for a real group shot in the thick forest of southern Ghana.

The Université du Québec à Chicoutimi hosts a phantastic francophone collection of full-texts called Les classiques des sciences sociales. Among this collection there are real gems for the cultural anthropologist, for example the writings of Émile Durkheim (1858-1917) and the writings of Lucien Lévy-Bruhl (1857-1939). Among the latter the Carnets (1938-1939) are of special interest. They form the late work of Lévy-Bruhl in which he reconsiders and clarifies his thoughts and theories. "Heavy fighting is once again raging in the town of Bunia in north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Dead bodies are reported to litter the streets of the town, where rival ethnic militias have been battling for control since Ugandan troops withdrew last week ", reports BBC. AEGEE, Europe's biggest student organisation, will organise a conference in Copenhagen/Denmark, from the 4th to the 10th of August 2003, with the title: "The European Role in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Perceptions and Future Possibilities". Participants of this conference will be European, Israeli, Jordanian, Lebanese and Palestinian Students.
