Amazon Indians Honor Indian Rights Advocate

The New York Times has an interesting article reporting about a burial ritual a dozen tribes from the Upper Xingu River performed for Villas Bôas, a white indian rights advocate, who died recently. The ritual is called quarup, and this one is one of the biggest they've ever made. Villas Bôas, who died with 88, was the eldest survivor of four brothers who devoted their lives to contacting and documenting the native peoples of the Brazilian Amazon and 'protecting them from the onslaught of modern civilization' and thus became an especially revered figure here.

Fieldworks: Dialogues between art and anthropology

Under this title an international symposium will be held from Friday 26 - Sunday 28 September at Tate Modern, London.

"Recent shifts in art and anthropology suggest an apparent overlap between the concerns and practices of those working in each field. The increasing use of ?fieldwork? by many artists and the ?ethnographic turn? described by art theorists, invite comparisons with anthropology. In anthropology, critiques of ethnography and fieldwork have raised fundamental questions about the nature of representation ? questions which have implications for art. " There are a lot of interesting persons as keynote speakers!

America - Save our Nature or how I explored the evironmental conscience in New York

The bottle i hold in my hand is bottled with the source of Crystal Geyser - a natural alpine sring water. It looks fresh, even healthy. I read the label and it seems that this natural splash is saving the american environment: "Making a difference - Crystal Geyser alpine spring water is a proud sponsor of American Forests' tree planting fpr environmental restoration". I drink it with a clear conscience. I continue to read the label: "Before opening, make sure cap safety ring is unbroken!". "Hey, they really care about me" is coming to my mind. But then? What do I have to read on my little, healthy friend? "Do not refill!". WHAT? Facts about saving the environment by bying plastic bottles on: www.crystalgeyserasw.com.

Today's Fascinating Video from 'Fieldwork'...

Greetings from Accra! It took us three internet cafes and countless attempts to upload this story... S./G.

'Cherchez le Chercheur' No. X

Students in Ethnology/Social Anthropology must travel the world. Or re-visit their 'field' (along with an observer). At least, that's how we think it should be... Here comes our first sign of life from our semester break trip, taken on the 11th of July in Accra-Jamestown (Ghana).

For a more lively account of how much fun traveling can be, look up this video[1] (video/x-ms-asf, 316 KB) ... Watch carefully and ask yourself what-in-the-world a German police man is doing in Africa.

Bibliographic Question

Does anyone know what it means if pages of a citation are in brackets, like in this citation: Böhr: Der Besuch von Feuerländern am Bord S.M.S. Hansa. Zeitschrift für Ethnologie (Verhandlungen); Bd. XIII, S. (30)-(31). Berlin 1881. Nothing important, I am just curious.
