Rüdiger Nehberg Missing !

Quiet ambigious feelings about the German Rüdiger Nehberg in respect to anthropology but still one of the adventurers giving up-to-day and sometimes valuable information about indigenous people in the Amazone. Now, during his latest adventures though the jungle, he is missing... various reasons might be possible...!

... just a media sensation or reality?

History of Evil

There's a nice online-edition of Paul Carus book "The history of evil, and the Idea of Evil from the Earliest Times to the Present Day", 1900. Paul Carus, an american philosopher, was trying to establish religion on a scientific basis. Later he was a advocator of relativity. Via Kellerkind

Translation of "Fremdbild"

I was just thinking about the proper translation of the phrase "Selbstbild und Fremdbild", which is a very often used word in german anthropology and means self perception and perception of the other. Is there a shorter translation for "Fremdbild"? I read the word "alter perception", but I don`t know if it fits here.

Cultural Adaption by Temperature

The largest german tabloid is diving into anthropological fields today by asking if the enduring heat in germany will make us all to africans (click image to enlarge). It think the theory nearest to this would be cultural materialism, or maybe also social darwinism, which connects natural settings with the cultural adaption to it. Everyone knows that africa is like africa because of the heat. They are completely determined by this basic setting. Take their clothes for example, they like it colorful to reflect the sun (white would get dirty too fast). They eat insects because its too hot to grow wheat or apples. And of course, all the dances throughout africa can be explained by the metereological circumstances: They dance for their gods, that they make rain, or at least less heat. Every child knows.

Anthropology in the News

The Texas A&M University is providing a page where you can look up all articles which were published in american newpapers since 2000 and are dealing with social and cultural anthropological topics. The last update was April 2001. I will try to figure out why they stopped it (because it's a helpful tool) - but anyways: maybe you will find something you need or you are interested in at www.tamu.edu/anthropology/newcult.html

Playing and Gambling in New York

Just a little note about the culture of some inhabitans of New York: I drove down the 42nd street by bus and got off at the 2nd Av. Somebody was screaming around "Playing cards - 3 for 10 Dollars", "Play and gamble with Saddam", ... I had a look at them and you also can check the cardset at the internet (www.dod.mil/news/Apr2003/pipc10042003.html)- there you get them even more expensive, but i guess you would not spend a coin on that...

The UN Acts Against Terrorism

I found that information page about the UN acts against terrorism in the web at www.un.org/terrorism/ - and i was appalled about the colours the UN is using to symbolize their fight against "the international terrorism". Actually it looks more like a home-made unprofessional page. But the information you can find there are helpfull if you are interested in news and developments, resolutions, conventions and declarations of the UN and their forces.

Koppers, Feuerlandindianer Online

I just discovered, that the whole book from Wilhelm Koppers (written together with Martin Gusinde) about the Indians of Tierra del Fuego, "Unter Feuerland-Indianern", is available online on a private website. Koppers, like the famous Gusinde, was a priest, but also a professor for Anthropology in Vienna. He did research under those now vanished indigenous people from south america in 1921/1922. He founded the journal "Anthropos" and was advocate of a comparative anthropology ("Kulturkreislehre").
