The State of Play

The State of Play Conference on "Law, Games, and Virtual Worlds" recently concluded at the New York Law School. A lot of papers dealing with questions like:

  • Who owns the virtual products of online game economies -- the companies that create the games, or the players who produce the economies?
  • Where's the line between game and life? Via Mindjack

is ethnology unnecessary?

yesterday i met a girl in a course. she told me that she's trying to do her MA after the 5th semester. she's "hurrying" because she wants back in her job, in tourism industry, earning money. She said to earn more money she had to study; she has chosen ethnology because it's so easy and no demand at all; she's interested in ohter people and their way of living. In her opinion ethnology is not necessary as a institution at university at all. For her the people who are interesting for ethnogists died out anyway.....I ask YOU now: do you think she understands what she is studying? should she take a degree in ehtnology? what's your opinion? i think that she knows a lot what the ethnography sais, but she does not understand..... and i think she's a shame for the subject.....

Study about the Digital Divide

A recent report about the digital divide (PDF) states, that a digital divide is more likely to happen in societies or region where the economic differences are already huge. (Show the first Paragraph of the introduction).
"Many assume that the digital divide - the large numbers of people who are not connected to the Internet - is small, shrinking, and rapidly becoming irrelevant. It is not. The term "digital divide" refers to multi-dimensional inequalities in Internet access and use, ranging from the global level, to nation states, to communities, and to individuals. The divide is here for some time to come. It is large, multifaceted, and, in some ways, it is not shrinking. Moreover, the divide is socially patterned, so that there are systematic and meaningful variations in the kinds of people who are on and off the Internet. These patterns vary between nations and over time, so last year's divide often does not necessarily resemble this year's, and Country A's divide does not necessarily resemble Country B's. Indeed, it is more accurate to use the plural "digital divides" because the nature of the digital divide varies within and between countries, both developed and developing. There is no one digital divide; there are many divides."

Motorbikes & Internet

Spiegel Online has today an article about technology adoption in Cambodia. To provide internet access, they use motorbikes to transport the data from a satelite dish to several access points. An example for taking the word "data highway" serious :-)) www.spiegel.de

Download Webpages

If you're doing online research, it is in some cases essential to download whole websites to store them on the harddisk - for archiving them or only to work with them. One free and useful tool for this task is the Webdownloader, which not only modifies the pages so that you can use the links (the URLs pointing now to the pages on your harddisk), but also keeps the original, unmodified versions of the pages. Remember: The free program is called "Webdownloader". Don't mix it up with the "Offline Browser", a more complex successor which is also offered on that page for money. If you know a more sophisticated program for this task, recommendations or short reviews are welcome.

OpenOffice and StarOffice

Students all over the world: Did you ever have a hard time with MS-Word and its sometimes strange behaviour? Or even sleepless nights, plagued by paranoia 'cause the copy of MS-Office you use is ... well ... not quite "bought"? This era of uneasiness is over now. Now you can use OpenOffice, a free open-source office suite which features everything the MS-suite does. And it has several advantages apart from being free: For example you can export your documents as .pdf files, and OpenOffice saves everything in XML format, which means that the documents thoretically can be converted into any format, e.g. into publishable .html. You can read the book OpenOffice.org XML Essentials on this topic by J. David Eisenberg online. The second thing is that Sun Microsystems maintains an own improved version of OpenOffice, called StarOffice. StarOffice has very good dictionaries implemented for example. And its free for students, university and school employees. via mosaikum
