We invite applications for two Ph.D. Research Fellowships (social anthropology) in an SNSF funded research project:

Development and Trust in Upper Mesopotamia: The social impacts of GAP (Güneydoğu Anadolu Projesi)

The fellowships are for three years, starting prospectively Feb 2012, including one year of ethnographic field research in Turkish Mesopotamia in parts differently affected by GAP ventures. The design of the project envisions to have a number of locally grounded field sites that reflect different stages of the implementation of GAP. It will include sites where the flooding of villages and agricultural fields has happened some time ago as well as more recent cases and those that are still waiting for the onset of development. In each of these the outcomes and consequences for the population are expected to differ significantly.

Candidates are required to hold an MA in anthropology or a related discipline and are expected to enroll in a PhD program at the University of Zurich. Fluency in Turkish (ideally also Kurdish and/or Arabic) is expected.

Applications should enclose a cover letter describing their background and motivation, Curriculum Vitae and their MA certificate or equivalent.

Salary will be according to SNSF Funding Regulations.

Der Film erzählt die Geschichte des deutschen militärischen Engagements in Afrika von 1940 bis heute. Zugleich ein Film über den deutschen Mythos Afrika:

BEFREIEN SIE AFRIKA! ist ein Dokumentarfilm über das Bild Afrikas in Deutschland und die Rolle Deutschlands in Afrika. Anhand der Darstellungen des "Schwarzen Kontinents" und der Vorstellungen, die sich die Deutschen vom Leben der Afrikaner machen, beschreibt der Film die deutsche Afrikapolitik in der Zeit vom Zweiten Weltkrieg bis heute. Ein Film über das Afrika-Bild der Deutschen in Ost und West und darüber, was sie in den letzten fünfzig Jahren im realen Afrika suchten. In vier Jahren wurden Tausende von Stunden Filmmaterial gesichtet, um einen Überblick über die filmische Darstellung von Afrika in den beiden Deutschlands zu bekommen. Mit fünfhundert Ausschnitten aus über siebzig Filmen und bisher unveröffentlichtem Material aus ost- und westdeutschen Archiven zeigt BEFREIEN SIE AFRIKA!, wie sich längst überwunden geglaubte Vorstellungen vom "Schwarzen Kontinent" bis heute in vielen Darstellungen Afrikas wiederfinden.
