Yesterday, on 4th of July 2005 the authors Prof. Dr. Nina Glick Schiller, Dr. Data Dea, and Markus Höhne (Ph.D. candidate) have submitted a report to the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Halle/Saale Germany) called: "African Culture and the Zoo in the 21st Century: The 'African Village' in the Augsburg Zoo and Its Wider Implications" The report is based on ethnographic fieldwork at said zoo during the four days of the event. Now it awaits final supervision and will be made available online in a few days. Stay tuned.

Die Zeit veröffentlich seit einiger Zeit neben den Redaktionsblogs einen weblog einer deutschen Studentin, die seit August in Kairo Arabisch studiert. Die Einträge drehen sich meistens um die klassischen Medienschlager Ethnozentrismus, politische Korruption, Sexisums usw.

Ich kann mir nicht helfen, aber beim durchlesen kriege ich ein mulmiges Gefühl in der Magengrube. Ich möchte nicht bestreiten, dass die Aussagen im blog unwahr sind, jedoch werde ich das Gefühl nicht los, dass durch arge Selektion ein arabisches Schauermärchen dargestellt wird. Eine Art Stereotyp Araber = brutal = korrupt = Terrorist. Auf der anderen Seite spukt´s in mir rum, dass das ja alles auch doch stimmt. Mir kommt die ganze Sache jedenfalls sehr einseitig vor.

Die Tatsache, dass der blog vor Ort geschrieben wurde, vermittelt eine gewisse Authentizität. Irgendwie reagiere ich trotzdem empfindlich auf sowas, auch wenn die Authentizität der Aussagen noch durch Zitate von Einheimischen belegt werden. Man kann sich O-Ton-Aussagen auch aussuchen. Die Zeit ist immerhin einer der größten Wochenzeitungen des deutschsprachigen Raumes und vertritt einen gewissen Anspruch auf Glaubhaftigkeit.

Bin ich nun von einem schönen Orient-Bild geblendet, dass ich die "Wahrheit" nicht wahrhaben will?

BBC Asia and Taipe Times report about a new indigenous television station in Taiwan. It is said to be the first broadcast of its kind in Asia.

BBC: "The programme [...] should have broad appeal both for aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities, say its makers. It is set to inform and even challenge people's views about the island's 12 aboriginal tribes, who account for less than 2% of the island's population of 23 million people.

Aboriginal groups have often felt marginalised by mainstream society. But they hope the new 24-hour television channel - iTV or the Indigenous Television Network - will be a chance for others to hear their voice, both at home and overseas."
