Local newspapers worldwide: a link list

A link list to local newspapers from all over the world (from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe) you can find here: www.thelocalpapers.com . (There also is a link list to newspapers from many US-American states.) There is not every country and every newspaper, but you can find an overview about what's going on in the country you are specially interested in. Another link list to newspapers all over the world you can find on www.onlinenewspapers.com. And there is another German website (www.zeitung.de) where you can find a link list. This list includes German writing newspapers which are not printed in Germany (like Jewish transatlantical newspaper Der Aufbau printed in New York City), too. Links to more East African newspapers you can find here, to West African newspapers here, many South African papers' links here and North African newspapers' links here. All these web pages include newspapers not listed by the other pages.

Madunia, an NGO to support African musicians

Madunia is a Dutch NGO, initiating many projects dealing with African music. Madunia is having tow different web sites on different music genres in Africa. There are different projects such as making videos with artists, inviting them for concerts in Netherlands, producing their music (e.g. for Tanzanian rapper Mr. II in Amsterdam). There also is a documentary movie about East African HipHoppers, the movie is called Hali Halisi (a Swahili expression meaning "the real situation"). One of the web sites is about African HipHop, the other one is about past and future music including descriptions of musicians like Tondo who plays acoustic versions of classic and less well known rumba music from East Africa's 70's and 80's; like Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe and his Nigerian Sound Makers International from Nigeria; or like Mr. II from Dar Es Salaam (see him on the photo). People from Madunia also are responsible for some articles about African music styles.

"Diplomatie mit Samthandschuhen"

Today I read an interesting article in the Süddeutsche Zeitung about the supposed German involvement in East Africa. The article originates in the actual debate about European military action in the conflict areas of Uganda, Ruanda and Congo. Interesting to see here once again is the critical debate on how anthropology and development aid don't mix. Make your own opinions!

Friday's Fascinating Fotographs from Fieldwork

Members of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana are celebrating Palm Sunday (Asamankese/Ghana, 2000)

"Cherchez le Chercheur" No. V Let's get away from last week's traditional issues. Here’s another picture of a fieldworker trying to get involved in his field: he does everything to feel, to act and to look like ‘them’. If only he knew how he really stands out from the crowd…

All dressed in their neat Sunday costumes, the Christian congregation gathers after the 3,5 hours church service to parade the main streets of the town. They are celebrating Palm Sunday (Jesus entering Jerusalem, as you know) with cheers, bells, a monstrously noisy brass band and bound branches from coconut and palm trees. Though the rainy season has already started the tropical sun burns heavily. The bald (bold?) man in the middle of the crowd certainly suffers the most.
