‘Cherchez le Chercheur’ – No. I While the ethnographic fieldworker is famous for producing countless photographic impressions of his own field, the documentary evidences of his presence and involvement in the ethnographic process are rather scarce. Hence, in this upcoming ‘Cherchez le Chercheur’ series on Fridays, I will present photographs which focus on one essential element of the fieldwork setting: the researcher himself. The pictures stem from my fieldwork project carried out in Kyebi, Akyem Abuakwa (Eastern Region/Ghana, Jan. - Aug. 2002). Don’t miss next week’s picture!! But it's saturday! No, serious, thanks a lot for this marvelous picture! This is a great enrichment for our weblog and will hopefully intensify interest in fieldwork. Wasn't it strange to go around there in the middle of the place as a foreigner, while all the others had to stand around? ... Link

True, the picture suggests me – the ‘foreigner’ – being at the focus of the crowd’s attention. Actually I wasn’t; other activities apart from the ritual food preparation were going on simultaneously. For instance, see the people playing the drums in the back. Interestingly - after this long day of ceremonial activities – some inhabitants of Kyebi approached me saying ‘Today you had a lot of work! You did a good job. We saw you busily working at the Palace with your camera’. At this stage of my fieldwork, most people were aware of the ethnographic purpose of my (admittedly odd…) presence. ...
