Bright future for anthropologists?

"Trend-spotting has, in essence, become just another trend. Consequently, the most successful trend forecasters are repositioning themselves as something more than mere arbiters of taste. They're now social scientists with a hipster edge. That's because it's no longer enough to be aware of "sext messaging" or video blogs or the drive-in movie revival. The real money and prestige are now bestowed on those who can translate the cultural hieroglyphics and the "whys" behind these blips." Link

bright future ?

Havent read the original entry at boingboing, but this can`t be but a joke.

One after another Anthropology department at german universities faces to get closed and as long as I am stuffed by my institute with equipment like this, while my university`s homepage continiously denounces proudly them great monetary efforts,
you cannot speak of Anthropology`s bright future seriously.

Indeed I wasn´t, that´s why I added the question mark.

The point is that corporate anthropology is very big for example in the states, whereas around here the reception of anthropologists in innovational development, market research and so on is just about to start. But it is starting at least. I got the opportunity of working in a short term research project with a business student and an anthropologist, but they´re both from another European country. According to them this sector is going to be the big thing. Enterprises are starting to take "cultural experts" seriously and are employing them but it´ll take ages until the authorities in Germany will react to it and support our generally impoverished institutes.
But of course this maybe will not happen unless the insitutes themselves change their educational policy towards something "more applicable" in the eyes of a possible employer.(The question is: do we want that?) But especially business education institutions abroad are very interested in that. In my colleagues school, there are many lecturers that studies anthropology, for example. People don´t know that anthropology is actually a very practical study and highly applicable anywhere you need a situational analysis of a certain group and understand its configuration. Anthropology is known to those guys. I got to know a guy in Munich who´s doing "visual market research" (That means using a digicam). We had a chat on the street and when I told I´m I´d study anthropology he´d do a summersault. The fact is, they all do read ethnographic methods! (Though he too was struggling with his job.)

Now, what´s the bright future? The first scenario is, that it´s all just another hype and enterprises are going to dump their "ethnographical methods" quickly again, the other one is - let me phantasize- that there´s going to be a lectureship sponsored by Siemens for example (Which is the rule in technological educational instutions already) and state as well as economy starts to employ anthropologists on a large scale. But I don´t know if I could fully agree with enterprises dabbling into academia that always bear a very clearly defined interest in investments.

Right now, the situation in Germany is more than poor, when you consider that most people on the street don´t even know what anthropology is.

Ps.: But I like the tape recorder.
